Walk along St Pete Beach
Even if you prefer shopping to sunbathing, the very first thing on the list is to take a walk along St Pete Beach or the quieter Pass-A-Grille Beach. The beautiful blue water and stunning white sand showcase the very best that Florida beaches can offer. If you want, it's possible to walk for miles, and the further you go, the more relaxed you'll become!
Take the ferry out to Shell Key
The Shell Key Shuttle is a must for anyone visiting the St Petersburg area. It leaves from just by Inn on the Beach, and takes shell-hunters and snorkelers out to the beautifully unspoiled barrier island that is Shell Key. Dolphins are commonly spotted on cruises around the island and in the summer, lucky visitors might even see manatee.

Wander through the Sunken Garden
St Petersburg has a hidden gem right in the city. The Sunken Garden is far more than just an ordinary botanic garden (although it does have a fantastic collection of orchids). There is a walk-in bird aviary and a butterfly house as well. Kids will be enchanted.
Hire a kayak, jet ski, or boat
St Pete Beach is just as beautiful looking from out at sea, and some would say it's a whole lot more fun that way round. There are plenty of places to hire boats and jet skis right on the beach, and for those who prefer a quieter day out under their own steam, there are kayaks, stand-up-paddle-boards, and surfing lessons (a great way to occupy the kids for a couple of hours).
Island Action Sports will even deliver a kayak or paddle board to wherever you want to get in the water, which means it's possible to pick a nice out-of-the-way spot where it's easier to spot a dolphin or manatee, or just relax and enjoy the sea.

If you've always wanted to try getting around in a Segway, Doo's Amazing Tours offer 1-hour tours through St Pete Beach. Mounted on your own personal eco-vehicle, you'll see the sights, hear some fascinating local history, and soak up the local color.
The Gulf Beach Museum
When it's time to take a break from the sun, St Pete Beach does offer plenty of things to do indoors as well. Take the kids along to the Gulf Beach Museum on 10th Avenue. It's staffed by volunteers with an unrivalled knowledge of Pinellas County and a passion to match, and is housed in a beautiful historic church. There is an incredible collection of artefacts and photographs dating back hundreds of years. Best of all, admission is completely free of charge.
Travel Tip
Shell Key is undeveloped (and unspoiled!) so be sure to take plenty of food and water with you. And don't forget the sunscreen!

The unit has cathedral ceilings giving it a spacious feel, and there are lots of windows providing stunning natural light. It's a peaceful, romantic escape just steps away from the Gulf of Mexico.
The Cottage
Next door to the Inn, this tranquil oasis has a large bedroom with a king bed plus a fully equipped kitchen. The living room is complete with seating area, cable television and a DVD player. The bathroom has a large shower. The outdoor deck has plenty of seating and a gas grill - perfect for outdoor suppers.
