My wife and I stayed at in the "Loft" at the Inn on the Beach for our wedding. The Loft is literally a loft studio apartment above the owner's garage, a couple of blocks away from the main inn. It's in a residential neighborhood, so it was very quiet. Room was across from the beach and had a large shaded deck. It was very well decorated and had a feel like you were in someone's house, not a hotel room. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance, or ride the trolley into St Pete Beach for a lot more choices.

Visited the Inn on the Beach in mid-May as a weekend getaway to a sunny beach location. Had 3 great days of sunshine. Only rained on the day we left, killing our plans for one last half day of beach time before heading back to NJ. Stayed in the Blue Heron room, which has a GREAT deck overlooking the Gulf, ideal for having a sunset cocktail and dinner (either takeout--try the sushi @ Tokyo Bay in the strip mall leaving St. Pete Beach) or cooked on the community gas grill provided. Weekend breakfast in the courtyard with really great coffee (we like it strong!) were great way to start the day. A few local spots for lunch or dinner are within walking distance. Also, try the kayak trail at Ft. Desoto Park.
The only disappointment was the shopping. Aside from the rather small weekend arts mall, wasn't much in "downtown Pass-a-Grille". Upon the recommendation of Sheila, we hit the Saturday morning market in downtown St. Pete, which was great. Also hit the shopping areas of St. Pete Beach on the rainy Monday, which was OK.
Overall, would absolutely recommend the Inn on the Beach. It's quiet, laid-back, and relaxing.
